Elevate your organization in the public health sector with the assistance of undergraduate and graduate-level student interns from National University (NU). Our program offers a diverse group of working adult students who bring valuable skills to enhance your public health related practices. Collaborate with our interns who possess knowledge across the specializations of Health Promotion, Community Mental Health, and Healthcare Administration, where they will work remotely on a main project or smaller initiatives for 8-12 weeks.

Important Note: We accept projects on a rolling basis as student cohorts become available.

Expected outcomes and deliverables
  • Harness the potential of our students to accomplish your projects/tasks during the practicum placement. This experience enriches your organization's resources and cultivates students' confidence and professional skills. Graduate students are expected to meet chosen Public Health competencies and create at least two 'documents' that benefit your organization and can be submitted to their course as evidence of completing internship requirements. Undergraduates have more flexibility on the project requirements but need to volunteer at least 75 hours.

Project Examples

Requirements

Students can complete a project or several smaller tasks for your organization over the placement period. The practicum placement, which is intended to contribute to an organization’s resources while developing the confidence and professional skills of the student, can include non-clinical projects that focus on Public Health areas such as:

Disease Control Initiative:

  • Analyze current disease control measures and recommend improvements.
  • Develop protocols and guidelines for preventing the spread of diseases.
  • Create educational materials on disease prevention for targeted populations.

Health Program Planning:

  • Conduct needs assessments to identify community health need

Community Engagement Campaign:

  • Create health promotion campaigns for specific communities.
  • Develop communication materials to raise awareness and engage the public.
  • Organize community events and workshops to educate and involve participants (if done remotely).

Evidence-based Interventions Review:

  • Conduct systematic literature reviews on public health interventions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions based on research findings.
  • Summarize key findings and provide evidence-based recommendations

These are just some examples, maybe you have other ideas?

Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a quick pre-selection phone call/zoom meeting with the program coordinator to initiate your relationship and confirm that the project scope is an appropriate fit. Your initial meeting with the student team introduces the company and project's scope, answers students' questions regarding the project, and outlines the expected communication schedule.

Conduct weekly meetings with the students until the project end date. Provide supportive feedback and analysis to students about their project's outcomes and quality. Advise where possible throughout the project and provide appropriate mentorship to ensure students align with company goals and outcomes.

The supervisor working with our graduate students serves in the role of a student mentor and is required to complete an NU MPH Preceptor Agreement. The preceptor will be a dedicated contact who is available to answer emails for the duration of the project to address students' questions. Preceptor qualifications include a Master’s Degree or comparable level of education in the public health field, or in a field related to the area of primary mentoring responsibility. A preceptor is required to have a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience.

Please note that this is an 8 week program (with some flexibility to extend to 12 weeks), so your project scope and expected deliverables should align with this time frame (please see dates in milestones).

Your final meeting reviews project deliverables. What is the expected deliverable? Example: Presentation, 2 page report, 4 pieces of content.
